Marshals said the woman had suffered injuries from broken glass resulting from the shooting, but her attorneys did not speak on her physical injuries. The attorneys did not release the name of the woman who was on a lunch date with Smith and asked the public to respect her privacy as she recovers from "this profound trauma." The U.S. Protests also followed the fatal police shooting of Black motorist Daunte Wright in the nearby suburb of Brooklyn Center in April. The shooting of Smith prompted a renewed wave of protests in a city that has been on edge since the murder of George Floyd, a Black man who was pinned to ground last year by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. It paid for the rights to a bunch of giant monsters and then just had them…hit each other a little. It never even makes an effort to go over the top. Rampage just isn’t creative enough to reach the level of fun bad. If anything’s going to have color and imagination, it’s Rampage, right? Instead of somehow going its entire run-time without a single memorable image? It makes me want to scream. I never had a conversation about the Rampage trailers that ended with: “Absolutely, those effects are very convincing, and the colorful, stylish direction/lighting go a long way toward hiding the seams.” Is there someone out there who watched, I don’t know, Pacific Rim, and then watched Rampage and was like, “Hell, yes, more of this please”? I mean, that person must exist, right? Presumably many of that person? It’s just…blockbusters are the only movies we defend on the level of “it’s just supposed to be mindless spectacle” and therefore have the least excuse to look like smelly garbage, and yet… I’m not the only person who thinks this is pretty fundamental, am I? That blockbusters are really only trying to do one thing, and for no reason that I can discern have completely abdicated that responsibility? It really can’t be an accident if it were, every blockbuster wouldn’t look like this. This new slate gray, anti-stylized, overlit, weightless somehow cinematography-free blockbuster non-aesthetic is no more expensive than… not that, and therefore has to be a conscious choice, right? Do people like this? Has this focus-tested well? I don’t know those people. We Need to Talk About Why Blockbusters All Look Like Garbage Now because I do not get it, and Rampage might be the worst offender yet. Give me something genuinely ridiculous - something with personality, presence, maybe even actual visuals that would be pleasing to watch on the big screen. I know next to nothing about the games, but research informs me their premise is people turning into enormous monsters as a result of experimentation at the hands of the evil corporation Scumlabs, and like…give me that movie. Rampage lives right on that line - except that I’m pretty sure the studio was not making it bad on purpose, as evidenced by the complete absence of anything from the games that general audiences might have perceived as “stupid.” I mean, if you’re going to adapt Rampage, at least adapt it - it ain’t high art and your audience isn’t really looking to take it seriously. There’s a point where making a bad movie on purpose stops being a carefully crafted joke and starts being a studio that’s realized people will throw money at them not to put forth any effort whatsoever. Octocrocasaurusboa or whatever with…more detailed effects, I don’t want to say more convincing because nope…and you’ve got Rampage. I mean, Rampage is basically the SyFy version of itself. And I will just…never forgive you, any of you, you sadistic liars. Regardless, all I heard everywhere was that Rampage was not that bad, and eventually, I started to believe it might be true. A few more of you told me it was fun bad. I did not believe you, because the trailers were much too aesthetically hideous. I still don’t understand why, with all these great, story-driven games lying out there untouched, Hollywood is plumbing the depths of friggin’ Rampage, which is just monsters wrecking things and hasn’t had a new entry since 2006, according to my research. I can’t say that I ever really had high hopes for this one. Howdy, folks, my name’s Matt, and I did not particularly care for Rampage. I remember the critical drubbing Warcraft received, but criminy, at least it had ambitions and an aesthetic. I’m actually offended on behalf of other video game movies despite them being pretty universally bad. I did not realize what a miracle you were. I’m truly sorry, Tomb Raider I cannot retroactively extend enough of my apologies to you. Rampage is not even the best video game movie this year. Before long, a giant, mutated wolf and crocodile start wreaking havoc, and it seems as though George may be humanity’s only chance of stopping them.Īngel on Matt’s Shoulder: Never hate a movie, Matt, movies are magic, even the bad ones, you wouldn’t want someone savaging something you made, would you?ĭevil on Matt’s Shoulder: dooooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttĪaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAīest…reviewed…video game movie…of all time? Regulation Soccer Ball Pressure: FIFA and Premier League The recommended psi for a size 5 soccer ball is between 8.5 and 15.6. It is used by players 12 and up as well as by professionals. The size 5 soccer ball measures 27-28 inches in circumference. Size 5 Soccer Ball Air PressureĬonsidered the “standard” for international play, the size 5 soccer ball is what is used for international match games. The recommended psi for a size 4 soccer ball is between 8.5 and 15.6. It is commonly used for more of a junior-level player who is between the ages of 8 and 12. Measuring 25-26 inches in circumference, the size 4 soccer ball is slightly larger than size 3, but not as large as a size 5. However, for players that are just starting out, you may want to have the soccer ball’s air pressure be on the lower end. The recommended psi for a size 3 soccer ball is between 8.5 and 15.6. It is commonly used for players under the age of 8. Measuring 23-24 inches in circumference and weighing about 10 pounds, the size 3 soccer ball is the smallest ball used during match play. If you are not sure which size ball you should use, take a look at our guide. It will also depend upon what organization’s (FIFA or Premier League) rules you are following. How much air your soccer ball should have will depend upon its size. Players will experience difficulty controlling the ball as it will act unpredictable.Ī soccer ball with too much air pressure can also cause injury as the ball is harder. If a soccer ball has too much air pressure, it bounces easily when kicked. Given that higher air pressure soccer balls travel further, you would think you would want to make the air pressure as high as it will go. That is if it moves at all and doesn’t just drop to the ground. No matter how strong of a kick you give a low air pressure soccer ball, it will only move a very short distance. A soccer ball with lower air pressure has a soft, mushy feel to it. The opposite happens with lower air pressure. When it is kicked, more energy is transferred to the ball which causes it to move further. A soccer ball with higher air pressure is stiffer. The Chinese also believed that Onyx was a mega protector, making this banded gem a fave in Feng Shui practice. Like other black and beautiful stones, it can absorb negative energy and help us to keep our own wise counsel. Protective - yes, but this stone also serves us in other ways too. There is so much more to the eye when it comes to Onyx. In fact, this dark and dreamy stone is beloved by goddesses and queens, and even Cleopatra was believed to keep the stone close as it was known for its potent protective powers. These immortal fingernails fell from the heavens of Mount Olympus and into the Indus River where they turned to Onyx. In ancient Greece, the legend said that Cupid cut the fingernails of his mother, the goddess Venus, using his famous arrow. This healthy lush looking gem takes its name from the Greek word for claw or finger thanks to the shape and luminous white of the bands that appear within the gem. If Onyx doesn’t excite your soul, take a look at our healing crystal guide to essential gemstones and find the stone that suits your needs. We delve further into the healing elements of this quiet and confident stone, discovering all the ways it can clear the path and balance polarities. From bringing shades of protection against negative energy to keeping the senses sharpened and encouraging a steadfast approach to a life filled with joy and fortune, Onyx is a stone of decisiveness and strength. Here we will be taking a closer look at the jet energy of Black Onyx. The meaning of Onyx is protection and fortune.Īfter hours doing a deep dive into the healing properties of Onyx, this variety of chalcedony strikes a chord in the heart. It is mostly made of calcite and has a waxy luster. However, varieties of Onyx can also be green, pink, brown, red and green and even clear with white banding. It is a parallel banded silicate mineral and tends to be black with white banding in its most common form. What is Onyx? Onyx is a variety of chalcedony. And she’s working through Alice, who believes her visions are a force of good. Now she has come back - a figment of the devil disguised as the spirit of the Virgin Mary. In 1845, she was hung from a tree (the dead one that draws Alice), a mask nailed onto her face (an homage to the chilling prologue of Mario Bava’s “Black Sunday”), and burned alive. She’s Mary Elnor, a 19th-century woman who performed miracles by channeling not God but Satan. She’s as hypnotically possessed as the long-black-haired specter in “Ringu,” and she moves with an ominous herky-jerkiness that evokes the spider-walk scene that got restored for the 2000 re-release of “The Exorcist.” The film’s imagery is out of a Christian nightmare: the stigmata (in this case, religious statues with elegant tears of blood), the figure of Mary herself, who within that cloak wears a black mask that marks her as a haunted marionette of death. The trouble with too many horror movies is that they muster all that technology and timing and rictus-grin-in-the-medicine-chest-mirror creepiness to basically say “Boo!” Watching “The Unholy,” I jumped a few times, but beyond the scare factor the film’s resurgent demon becomes a true character who reveals her nature in a kind of evil dance of the seven veils. There’s a poetic restraint to the effects. The tropes may appear standard - the flash cuts of evil, the whispers on the soundtrack, the cloaked specter who keeps showing up to jolt us, like Slender Man or Candyman or a recurring ghost out of “Insidious 9: Please Don’t Go in the Attic Again.” But Spiliotopoulos doesn’t assault the audience with supernatural imagery as though he were tossing grisly confetti. This is the first feature directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, who has worked as a screenwriter on films like “Hercules” and “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” and while he hits conventional beats of megaplex horror, he’s able to mold them with a streamlined coherence and directness. When the forces of Satan show up, you feel like they’re violating a daydream. It’s the depth of faith she conveys in the miracles she’s channeling that draws us into the movie. Her Alice is like Joan of Arc turned into a teenage televangelist who doesn’t just swoon for God she takes command. She seems possessed, all right - by the emotions surging around inside her. When she starts to heal people, and he watches a kid with muscular dystrophy walk away from his wheelchair, he realizes he’s got a scoop.Ĭricket Brown, who at times evokes the young Natalie Portman, has a melodious voice and features that quiver with life even when she’s in repose. But he hangs around long enough to see Alice, standing in front of a spindly dead tree, go into a beatific trance-out. Fenn has come to Banfield to cover a bogus sensational story about the mutilation of cows. The central character, apart from Alice, is a defrocked journalist-turned-tabloid reporter named Gerry Fenn, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan with a sleazy middle-aged panache that makes him a winningly jaded stand-in for all of us skeptics in the audience. Good and evil face off in every horror movie, but this one is truly a holy war. We know that the movie can’t be all sweetness and light, but what matters is how solidly it believes in those things. “The Unholy” is adapted from a 1983 James Herbert novel, and as written and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos it could almost be a faith-based horror film. Absorbing Mary’s spirit, Alice can suddenly hear and speak, and she can heal the sick, which attracts crowds of people to her rural town of Banfield, Mass. It stars an unheralded actress named Cricket Brown - mark my words, she’s going to go on to major things - who plays a deaf-mute young woman named Alice, who has visions of what she thinks is the Virgin Mary. But “The Unholy” has a religious plot that actually works for it. Its spooks and demons unfurl within a pop version of Christianity, which makes it sound no more exotic than last week’s “Exorcist” knockoff or last year’s helping of the “Conjuring” franchise. “ The Unholy” is a good tight scary commercial theological horror film.
